I must surely be dreaming. Just over a month back, I was among the many who had completely written off Kimi's Chances of winning the 2007 World Driver's Championship. Even though I am a die-hard Kimi fan. Even though I love him to death. Have learned to live with Kimi's close encounters and near misses at the title for too long now. But this was just unexpected. Kimi had an outside chance, and outside chance did he take to win the title. I am elated beyond expressions right now.
Going into the final race of the season at Interlagos Circuit in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Kimi started third. On pole position stood his Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa at his home Grand Prix, and next was Championship contender and rookie-favourite Lewis Hamilton.... Kimi next and behing him was reigning champion Fernando Alonso. The race started with an awesome note and Kimi getting off to a great start moving into second position. Fernando Alonso too came charging in and got ahead of his team-mate Hamilton. As a result of trying to out-breaking one another, Hamilton went ran wide onto the tarmac and lost track position. He was bumped all the way to 8th at the beginning of the 2nd lap.
As I always said, Kimi has probably had the worst of luck in the current drivers. He is one of the fastest yet with the worst luck. This time, a greater force maybe, tried to make up for all the previous bad lucks he suffered in his earlier pursuits of the title. This time, Lewis Hamilton, who needed to finish 7th or lower in the race for Kimi to win the title, was on the course for just that. Lewis suffered gearbox problems and that cost him the race. Bad luck. But dont complain. Kimi never did. With Alonso having to finish third or lower and Kimi Winning the race, the championship was to belong to Kimi. And though no one expected it, given the Mclaren reliability, I think the animosity between the Mclaren drivers helped Kimi a lot. Also the thing that helped him was Felipe Massa who proved to be an amazing team-mate. He's not a side-kick please.
In the end it stood like this:
Result in Brazil:
1st---KIMI (10 points)
2nd---MASSA (8 points)
3rd---FERNANDO (6 points)
7th---HAMILTON (2 points)
and the driver championship that stood so: BEFORE BRAZIL FINAL ROUND (17)
1st--HAMILTON--107 points
2nd--FERNANDO--103 points
3rd--KIMI--100 Points
And as u can do the math, at the end of the year, Championship was Kimi's :)
1st--KIMI 110 points
2nd--HAMILTON 109 points (He came 2nd more times than alonso, equal on wins)
3rd--FERNANDO 109 points
This has been a real dream for me. To see Kimi Win his first WDC. And in a year where i felt all hopes were lost, it feels good to know now that...MIRACLES DO HAPPEN....
This was truly a wonderful race...in every sense... You had to watch it to feel it...
